single // Sleepwalkers
The first single to be lifted from Modey
Lemon's second Mute album The Curious
City, 'Sleepwalkers' is a compact, frazzled rock tune driven
on by a throbbing Mooged bassline and prowling guitar riffs (occasionally
touching on Sonic Youth's 'Dirty Boots'). Paul
Quattrone’s drums are pounded rapidly and incessantly
like the best moments on the Kings Of Leon's second album, while
singer / guitarist / synthmeister Phil Boyd delivers
a vocal that highlights a new clarity and confidence.
Built on dirty great motorik riffs and a ear-splitting
array of distorted percussion, 'Circe' packs a vicious punch, built
around a chugging and absorbing near-Metal groove. The five-minute
'Rocket Stew, Moon Croon' is a song of two halves - the first is
plaintive and quiet, shuffling percussion, a lazily-worked bassline
and Moog colouring, the vocal for some reason reminding me of Nik
Kershaw (don't ask); the second half is simply louder - all the
ruminative elements suddenly become cacophonous and forthright,
creating a tension and rage that the earlier, forgettable section's
discussion of witches and warlocks didn't seem to anticipate.
