If 18 was intended to be a progression from
Play, releasing 'In This World' as the third single was a
mistake. First single, the uplifting rock of 'We Are All Made Of
Stars' tried to prove that Moby was more than what the public
perceived after Play's universal appeal, more than someone
who simply threw old gospel samples over hip hop beats with tinkly
piano and symphonic strings; 'In This World', whilst on its own
a beguiling and quite absorbing song, is simply Play-by-numbers,
literally consisting those elements listed above.
Far more compelling are the two B-sides, 'Piano
& Strings' and 'Downhill'. The former includes, naturally, Moby's
euphoric string sound, but balances this with a dark piano motif
and scratchy break to create something not dissimilar to Craig Armstrong's
tracks with Massive Attack. 'Downhill', which may or may not feature
a female voice repeatedly singing the song's title, is an absorbing,
subtle and atmospheric piece, which finds Moby relatively minimal
and restrained, with a deep, layered style.
