single // Get It On
Anyone wistfully wishing for Nick Cave to
stop singing plaintive love songs and get back to the wretched noise
of his pre-Bad Seeds combo The Birthday Party may
well feel assuaged by his new group, Grinderman – himself
and a cut-down Bad Seeds – which, on the strength of the limited
edition 'Get It On' returns the cult figure to his angry, raw and
restless earlier self. Some may argue that along with an Earl Hickey-esque
handlebar moustache, Mr Cave has grown some new bollocks on the
way.
'Get It On' showcases a primal, tortured blues –
minimal, structured but at the same time mature and measured with
a healthy dose of controlled grit and abrasiveness. It may not enter
the howling recklessness of The Birthday Party at their most nasty
– one always got the impression that those songs were in danger
of collapse at any point – but it is definitely a thrilling
noise, beginning with subtle percussion and poetically-phrased lyrics
before a fuzzy riff (courtesy of either Warren Ellis or Cave himself,
who plays guitar for the first time with Grinderman) sexes the whole
thing up in spades.
Cave obsessives will be gratified too by the limited
edition, single-sided, numbered 7” which features an etching
of Cave’s own nude sketches from the embossed front cover.
'Get It On' answers the questions posed over Cave’s next move
at the end of the last Bad Seeds album – on the strength of
this single, Cave’s first project without stalwart partner
Mick Harvey is set to be impressive indeed.
