single // Say A Little Prayer
I alighted upon a 7" of this single while browsing
through a box of second-hand vinyl in a funky little record shop
in Luxembourg. My knowledge of the Rhythm King
imprint is reasonably limited, but buying this made me think that
it was high time I started reviewing some of the releases for this
site.
I suspect that your response to Bomb The
Bass's cover of Aretha Franklin's 'Say A Little Prayer'
depends very much on whether you like the original or not. I don't
especially care for it, and hence I'm reasonably indifferent about
this version, though vocalist Maureen Walsh does a passable job
of aping Franklin's vocal, but vocally it feels like an audition
for something like X-Factor. Tim Simenon
and Pascal Gabriel create a woozy, muted electro
backdrop which wouldn't go amiss on an Eighties Pet Shop Boys album,
or, at a stretch on the first Massive Attack LP. In short, it's
nothing essential.
The major draw of this single, for me at least,
is the flip-side, '10 Seconds To Terminate' (whose title has me
thinking of ED209's ultimatum in Robocop). A pulsing, rushing 808-style
4/4 rhythm with semi-industrial clanging is topped off by samples
of 'The Robots' and 'Numbers' by Kraftwerk - reminding
the listener that it is inconceivable of course, today, that anyone
could rip samples like this without any credit whatsoever, especially
of Kraftwerk - augmented smartly by a 303 riff that's being restrained
against its will. Sure it's locked forever in the late Eighties
dance music scene, like a fly in amber, but '10 Seconds To Terminate'
has an enduring charm, a quality which reminds you of just how fresh
and pure dance music was back then.
A live version of '10 Seconds To Terminate' and
a remix of 'Say A Little Prayer' are available on the limited remix
12” and CD editions of this single.
